Can I Get One with a Diesel Engine?

Which Drivetrain Will be Available?
Three choices are currently on offer for American buyers: a 404-horsepower V6 (the only option until 2014), a 460-hp V8, or a 520-hp V8. For European buyers, there’s also an eight-cylinder diesel offering.

If you opt for a front-drive, be prepared for a $3850 gas guzzler tax on either model. The 3200’s standard 17 mpg city/26 highway numbers are quite respectable given its size (it weighs in at 4000 pounds) and power output.
If you want higher fuel economy, get ready to cough up an extra $2000 for a diesel (or wait until 2014). It may be worth it—the diesel gets 28 mpg city/46 highway.
The only transmission is an eight-speed automatic. Steering is rack-and-pinion electric power; a conventional hydraulic system isn’t offered.
It is a front-to-rear independent suspension, with antiroll bars at both ends. The vehicle is so close to a true sports car as you can get with an SUV. You feel like you’re driving a Maserati GranTurismo when you plant your foot on the 3200.
What’s New for 2022?
The new Quattroporte’s full redesign is a big leap forward for a model that has been on sale since 1996. The biggest change is under the hood; like many of its rivals, it now uses an electrified powertrain. Underpinning is a new platform shared with the Ghibli II and Levante II crossover.
Both luxury sedans get standard all-wheel drive; if customers want rear-wheel drive in either car, they’ll have to opt for non-hybrid models.
With battery packs and other electric hardware included, both cars will weigh about 1,200 pounds more than their non-hybrid predecessors; that means performance should be relatively unchanged from today’s models.
The new Ghibli’s mechanical upgrades are extensive. A redesigned platform is shared with its sedan sibling and should improve refinement over today’s model.
Underpinning is a new platform shared with the Quattroporte II; both cars will get standard all-wheel drive as well as electronically controlled multilink suspensions.
The electrified powertrain setup used in both cars differs slightly from that of Audi’s Q8 e-Tron SUV; rather than a single electric motor on each axle, each car uses two motors mounted upfront.
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a five-passenger crossover that competes with vehicles like BMW’s X3 and Jaguar’s F-Pace.
It uses a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer unibody; under its hood sits a choice of three engines. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 280 horsepower in front-wheel-drive models or 306 hp with all-wheel drive.
A 3.0-liter V6 comes next, putting out 362 hp or 404 hp depending on whether it is paired with front or all wheels.
All engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission; each axle gets its own electrohydraulic limited-slip differential when AWD is specified.
Where Does it Fit in the Luxury SUV Segment?
Yes! The new Ghibli does improve upon some of its competitors. For example, it’s more fuel-efficient than many comparable vehicles in its class such as the Mercedes Benz E-Class or BMW 5 Series.
But if you were looking for a solid SUV with similar features and prices, your best bet is to go with one of their other models: QX50, QX70, or Quattroporte.
