5 Benefits of Using Olive Oil for Hair
How you take care of your hair and what products you use can make or break your look. While there are some amazing hair care products on the market, many of them contain harsh chemicals that damage your tresses instead of helping them.
The next time you need to condition your hair, reach for a bottle of olive oil. It not only smells great, but it’s also full of natural ingredients that benefit your scalp and hair follicles without any additives or toxic chemicals that can dry out or damage your locks. Check out these 5 benefits of using olive oil for hair below.
1) How olive oil helps
Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats that nourish and hydrate hair from within. This helps avert dryness and breakage by strengthening and conditioning strands.
Olive oil also promotes a healthy scalp, which helps keep dandruff at bay and hair looking luscious. The antioxidants in olive oil help fight off damaging free radicals caused by sun exposure, heat styling, poor diet, etc., which makes it ideal for protecting your locks against premature aging.
Olive oil can be used on wet or dry hair to promote shine and manageability, but it’s especially effective when applied to damp strands before blow-drying. It’s best to use organic olive oil because non-organic varieties are often heavily processed with chemicals and may contain low levels of pesticides.
Olive oil can be found at most grocery stores or purchased online. A small amount goes a long way. So there you have it: five benefits of using olive oil for hair.
Olive oil can be expensive if you buy a high-quality brand, so remember to look for sales and stock up when prices are lowest. You might even consider buying olive oil in bulk (but make sure it’s stored properly). Olive oil should last several months if stored in a cool dark place away from sunlight.
2) Pre-treatment before shampoo
The simplest way to use olive oil on your hair is to pre-treat it before shampooing. Massage about a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil into your scalp, then wrap your head in a hot towel and let it sit for 15 minutes. Wash and condition as usual.
This will leave your hair noticeably smoother and shinier, not to mention completely de-gunked. You can also do an overnight treatment: mix two tablespoons of olive oil with two tablespoons of honey and massage it into your scalp at night.
After you wash in the morning, you’ll be left with smooth, soft tresses that are perfectly primed for styling. If you have long hair, put it up in a bun before going to bed.
Simply clean it in the morning. The results should start to show after one week if you apply olive oil each day.
In fact, many people find they only need to do an olive oil treatment once or twice a month. For those who have tried all kinds of products without success, olive oil might be just what they need to make their hair manageable again.
It’s particularly good for dry or damaged hair that needs conditioning and hydration but has become accustomed to heavy products. And it’s gentle enough for everyday use; even those with sensitive scalps shouldn’t experience any problems from using olive oil regularly.
It does take some getting used to, though. If you’re new to using olive oil on your hair, try doing a patch test first by rubbing a little bit of extra virgin olive oil onto your wrist or arm (don’t forget behind your ears!). Wait 24 hours and see how you feel.
You may notice some itchiness, redness, or flaking which would indicate that you have sensitive skin and should stop immediately. Or you could discover that you love it. Either way, don’t worry too much about sensitivities.
Just because something doesn’t work for one person doesn’t mean it won’t work for another. Olive oil is still worth trying, especially since there are so many other benefits to reap from using it on your hair.
3) Olive oil as a regular conditioner
If you’re looking to create your own hair-conditioning concoction, olive oil is a great place to start. Apply olive oil to your hair while it’s wet, or use it as a deep conditioner once or twice a week before shampooing. You can also apply olive oil directly to dry ends to smooth and nourish them.
There are even shampoos and conditioners that incorporate olive oil as their main ingredient. Some people may not be too fond of the olive oil smell, but most people won’t even notice.
The health benefits of using olive oil on your hair far outweigh any odor concerns. And if you’re worried about an oily scalp, don’t be the right amount of olive oil that will give your scalp just enough moisture without being greasy.
When using homemade treatments such as olive oil, be sure to read the instructions to make sure it won’t clog your pores. And when finished, be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly.
otherwise, your hair will look greasy and be weighed down from all that excess oil. (If you have particularly oily hair, try diluting your olive oil with some water.) As with other natural remedies, there are no guarantees when it comes to results.
Your mileage may vary based on how healthy your hair is in general and how long you’ve been dealing with dandruff issues. However, olive oil has proven time and again to be beneficial for skincare products due to its moisturizing properties. So don’t rule out those olives yet.
Whether you’re trying to get rid of dry skin or dandruff, we recommend giving olive oil a shot. It could work wonders for your hair.
4) When to use olive oil as a leave-in conditioner
One of my favorite ways to use olive oil is as a leave-in conditioner. After shampooing and conditioning, I run a few drops through my hair, mainly focusing on mid-shaft and ends.
Because olive oil has natural moisturizing properties that help seal in moisture, it’s perfect for dry hair! It helps to protect your scalp from sun damage too. Be sure to wash your hands after applying because it can be difficult to get out if you accidentally touch your eyes or skin.
When to use olive oil as a deep treatment: Deep treatments are great for helping repair damaged hair and promoting growth. Just apply a generous amount of warm (not hot) olive oil to your hair (make sure it’s not so hot that it will burn you), cover with plastic wrap, put on an old t-shirt, then wrap with a towel.
Let sit for at least 30 minutes before rinsing with cool water. To lock in all those amazing nutrients, follow up with a cold rinse.
When to use olive oil as a styling product: Olive oil makes a superb styling product when mixed with beeswax. Mix 1/2 cup of melted beeswax and 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil together until well combined.
Use it like any other styling product just remember that it does have a different consistency than most products so don’t overdo it.
You can also add some rosemary essential oil for added shine and a good smell. When to use olive oil as a makeup remover: I love using olive oil as a makeup remover.
It works really well on waterproof mascara and long-wearing lipsticks. Just rub gently into your eye area or lips until makeup starts to break down, then wipe away with a cotton ball or tissue.
When to use olive oil as body lotion: Olive oil makes an excellent body lotion! Apply directly after showering while the skin is still damp.
Massage gently into skin until absorbed but be careful around sensitive areas like knees and elbows where it might irritate since it’s pretty thick! If you want something less greasy, mix equal parts olive oil and aloe vera gel. Learn how to get olive oil out of clothes
5) Create an at-home spa treatment with extra virgin olive oil
Massage extra virgin olive oil into your hair and scalp, then wrap your head in a hot towel or get into a warm shower for 10-15 minutes. Rinse out with cool water, shampoo, and condition as usual.
This treatment can be done once per week to help keep dandruff at bay. The antioxidants in extra virgin olive oil can also help soothe irritated skin on your scalp caused by sunburns, burns from curling irons, or even split ends. You can use it as an overnight moisturizer too.
And if you have long hair, you know how important it is to protect your ends from getting dry and brittle. One tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil mixed with one egg yolk makes a great deep conditioning mask that will make your hair feel silky smooth. Apply to clean, damp hair and let sit for 30 minutes before rinsing out.
